Paul and I met in 1972 and between us we have repaired and replaced every kind of tyre you can imagine (and probably, some you can't) from an Earthmover to a wheelbarrow and everything in between. If its was round and black you had come to the right place.

Our partnership worked well, but Paul was making more and more trips to France. Needless to say, I was sorry when he decided to leave and follow his passion for all things military. For Those of you who knew Greeny, he moved first to France as a WW1 / WW2 guide and then to Florida with his wife Peg.

Ace Nottingham worked well until the the housing market slowed dramatically in the 90's recession and overnight people stopped building houses (If you can't sell them, no point in building them). As two thirds of our work was in this market Ace Nottingham was forced to change direction and after some tough decisions, staff changes and training, started to do mechanical work.

My wife Christine became a partner and we changed the name to Ace Tyre Auto to better reflect the type of work we did, Ace nottingham became more and more mechanical and less and less tyres.

On the 8th March 1997 we had a major fire that put my step son Mark in hospital with 2nd and 3rd degree burns and left me and the garage gutted.

After a lot of hard work by Christine, Roy, Jonathon & myself, we re-opened in May the same year, (no one thought it was possible). Thankfully Mark recovered well from his injuries and is still working with me today, only going to prove that miracles do happen, although looking at the pictures of Mark and the garage just after the fire, (can't show Mark too gruesome) you wonder how he survived. Jonathon has since moved on but still visits from time to time.

For numbers of reasons I won't bore you with, Christine & I decided to shut down the old company Ace Tyre & Auto and everything about it ceased to exist. We re-built the front of the building and re-structured the inside, everything from the paperwork to the ramps.

When Ace Auto Services was born. It was a completely new company, Phoenix from the ashes so to speak.

Tyres account for some 10 - 15% of our business now with the vast majority of our work being everything from head gaskets to oil changes, clutches and servicing to brakes to wheel bearings. We still do tyres, punctures & tracking but mainly car & light commercial (van).

Our motto has become If they can build it we can mend it.

 

Our gratitude Will always go to everyone who helped us through that difficult time. and especially to the dedicated staff at the Specialist Burns Unit in Nottingham's City Hospital.
